1998 Fishing Journal
Friday, June 12th
When the sun went down Thursday evening I could tell that Friday morning was going to be a great one. I made the decision to fish some moving water. I decided to fish the Yampa River through the Service Creek State Wildlife area. There is about a mile of river to fish here and typically if I can get up early enough to be one of the first people to fish the prime runs I can do well. I was on the water by 7:30 am. The water was reasonably clear and flowing very fast. I think they must be releasing more water than usual from the Stagecoach Reservoir dam, which is about 2 miles up stream.
Not much action early on. Fished two of my favorite runs on this river without even a strike. With the high water, I change my strategy and fish the sides ignoring the traditional runs. First fish I hooked up on was a brook trout about 11" and very fat. Soon started catching mountain whitefish using a #18 black AP nymph fished with a lot of weight and bounced along the bottom. Not very pretty to cast, however, it was productive. Caught a 12" Rainbow followed by another one that was 16 inches in the same run. Fished for about 2 hours and caught the three trout and 15 mountain whitefish. Was back in town in time for an early lunch with Sherrie.
